Acids and Bases Flashcards
Acids
Proton donor
Strong Acids or Bases
Fully dissociate into their ions
Weak Acids or Bases
Do not fully dissociate - only a small proportion of the acidic ions come off
Proton Donor
Can donate H+ ion
Monoprotic Acid
An acid that can donate one hydrogen ion
Polyprotic Acid
An acid that can donate more than one hydrogen ion
Base
Produce OH- in a solution or neutralises acid
Bronsted-Lowry Definition
Acids donate a proton and bases accept a proton
Amphiprotic Substance
A substance that can act as an acid or base
pH
Measures the acidity of a solution; values range from 0-14
Buffer
Used to maintain a neutral pH and/or guard against rapid changes to pH
Buffer Solutions
Consist of a weak acid and its conjugate base or a weak base and its conjugate acid in a 50/50 ratio
Titration
Process used to determine the unknown concentration of a solution
Equivalence Point
Indicator changes colour, titrant has neutralised analyte solution
Half Equivalence Point
Half the weak acid has turned into the conjugate base, pH=pKa
