Acids and alkalis Flashcards
Property of acid (not the sour one)
Acids dissolve in water to form solutions which conduct electricity
Sulfuric acid+Calcium
Calcium sulfate+Hydrogen gas
Nitric acid +Sodium carbonate
Sodium nitrate + Carbon dioxide +Water
Hydrochloric acid +Potassium hydroxide
Potassium chloride + Water
What do acids form when they react with magnesium?
Salt and hydrogen gas
What is a strong acid?
An acid that easily/completely ionise in water.
What is a weak acid?
An acid that only partially ionise in water
What do alkali produce when they are dissolved in water?
Hydroxide ions
Two properties of alkalis
Have a bitter taste, turns moist red litmus paper into red
Sodium hydroxide + Hydrochloric acid
Sodium chloride + Water
Uses of alkalis
Calcium hydroxide
Aqueous ammonia
Used to reduce acidity in soil.Soil that is too acidic will cause crops to die.
Used to make fertilisers
What do they represent in the pH scale? 0 to 1 5 to 6 7 8 to 9 13 to 14
Strong acid Weak acid Neutral Weak alkali Strong alkali
What do they represent in the universal indicator? 0 1 to 2 4 to 5 6 to 8 9 to 11 12 to 14
