Acids, Alkalis, Neutralisation, Salts Flashcards
Acids
A solution with a ph level of less than 7
Alkali
- soluble base
- ph level more than 7
- chemically opposite to acids
Corrosive
-when a substance can burn you skin or eyes
Concentrated
-solution that has a large number of solute/acid particles per unit volume
Dilute
Solution that has a few solute/acid particles per unit volume
Strong acids
-can wear away materials
Caustic
- able to burn skin
- damage other materials
Neutral substance
-not acidic or alkaline
pH
Amount of hydrogen
pH 0-6
Acidic
pH 7
Neutral
pH 8-14
Alkaline
Universal indicator or litmus paper colours
- acids turn red
- alkali turn blue
- neutral turns green
Indicator
Substance that changes colour to show whether a solution is acidic or alkaline
Litmus paper
-An indicator
Universal indicator
-indicator of pH level
pH scale
It shows whether a substance is acidic, alkaline or neutral
Neutral
- solution that is neither alkaline or acidic
- pH 7
Base
-substance that can neutralise an acid
- makes products salt + water
-
Neutralisation
-reaction where an acid cancels out a base
Equation for neutralisation
Acid + base -> salt + water
Salt
Compound formed when an avid reacted with a metal/ compound
Nitric acid makes which salt
Nitrate
Sulphuric acid makes which salt
Sulfate
