acid naming rules Flashcards
how to recognize an acid?
look for hydrogen symbol on the left or -COOH on the left
naming rules for: hydrogen________ide
hydro______ic acid
naming rules for: hydrogen________ate
__________ic acid
(e.g hydrogen chloride becomes chloric acid with this rule)
naming rules for: hydrogen________ite
_______ous acid
(e.g hydrogen chlorite becomes chlorous acid with this rule)
what does ph measure
it measures the concentration of hydrogen ions in a solution. more hydrogen makes something more acidic.
how to recognize an acid
look for hydrogen on the left or COOH on the right.
do you use acid names if not in water ?
no the names only apply when the acids are in an aqueous environment. that is because acids only become acidic at this point.
how to recognize a base
hydrogen atom with a metal or an ammonium ion.
what is a base
ph less than 7. usually an ionic hydroxide that dissociates in water to release ions. only becomes basic in water.
balancing chemical equations.
both must be the same on each side without changing subscript . do algebra.
