Acid, bases and neutralisation Flashcards
Definition of an acid
They are proton donors.
When an acid is dissolved in water it release H+ ions
Definition of a strong acid
They fully dissociate (break apart) in an aqueous solution
Definition of a weak acid
They only parcially dissociate in an aqueous solution.
They are alsoreversable
Definition of a base
They are proton exceptors
Definition of an alkaline
They are proton exceptos
What does an acid + a base =
Neutralisation (salt + water)
What does the equilibrium sign indicate?
That the forword reaction is imcomplet. And that it is reversable
Acid + metal oxide —–>
Salt + water
Acid + metal hydroxide (alkali) —–>
Salt + water
Acid + metal carbonate —–>
Salt + water + carbon dioxide
What is the formula for hydrochloric acid?
HCl
What is the formula for sulfuric acid?
H2SO4
What is the formula for nitric acid?
HNO3
What is the formula for ethanoic acid?
CH3COOH
