Acid+Bases Flashcards
WHat is the pH scale for strong+weak alkalis?
WA-8-10-dark blue to purple
SA- 11-14-light purple to dark purple
WHat is the pH scale for strong+weak acids?
SA-0-3 - red-dark range
WA-4-6-dark orange-yellow
What is the pH of a neural substance?
7
What is universal indicator?
- combination of dyes
-to find pH f aq solution add indicator to it and compare colour formed to the chart
What is Litmus paper?
-test whether solution is acid/alkali-changes colour at about 7 pH
Red in acidic, purple in neutral, blue in alkaline
Colour change in phenolphthalein?
-colorless in acid - bright pink in alkaline
Colour change in methyl orange?
Red in acid-yellow in alkaline
What is an Acid?
-source of hydrogen ions
-proton donors
-pH less than 7
What is a base?
-a substance that neutralises an acid
-proton acceptors
Alkalis are soluble bases- source of hydroxide ions + pH more than 7
What is a neutralisation reaction/proton transfer?
- acid donates protons-accepted by base
-When acid neutralizes a base or vise-versa-the products are neutral-pH lf 7
What is formed during a neutralisation reaction?
A salt,an ionic compound
-the type of salt depends on what acid is used.
What is the neutralisation reaction equation?
acid+base=salt+water
what is the reaction between an acid+metal oxide?
=salt+water
what is the reaction between an acid+metal hydroxide?
=salt+water
what is the reaction between an acid +ammonia?
=Ammonium salt
