Acid-Base Disorders Flashcards
pH > 7.45 indicates:
Alkalosis
High PaCO2 + pH les than 7.35 indicates:
Respiratory acidosis
Low PaCO2 + pH > 7.45 indicates:
Respiratory alkalosis
High HCO3 + pH > 7.45 indicates:
Metabolic alkalosis
Low HCO3 + pH less than 7.35
Metabolic acidosis
Metabolic acidosis symptoms
Hyperkalemia, peaked T waves, bradyarrhythmias, hyperventilation
Normal anion gap
9-11
Excessive anion gap
> 17
Seen in metabolic acidosis
Causes of Excessive anion gap:
Uremia, diabetes ketoacidosis, lactic acidosis, ethanol intoxication
Metabolic alkalosis symptoms
Hypokalemia, flattened T waves, bradyarrhythmias, hypoventilation
Causes of Metabolic alkalosis:
Increased HCO3 retention (vomiting) & contraction alkalosis (diuresis)
Respiratory alkalosis symptoms
Agitation, anxiety, lightheadedness, hyperventilation
Causes of Respiratory alkalosis:
Pain, anxiety, fever, head trauma, CVA, theophylline, nicotine, catecholemine, severe anemia, high altitude, hyperthyroidism
Causes of Respiratory acidosis:
Ventilation or perfusion failure
pH less than 7.35 indicates:
Acidosis
