Acid Base Blitz Flashcards
The fastest pH compensation system
Carbonic Acid- Bicarbonate Buffer system (seconds)
The second fastest pH compensation system
Respiratory buffering system
minutes
The slowest pH compensation system
Kidneys (hours to days)
Normal ratio of Bicarbonate and carbonic acid
20:1
The function of the Carbonic Buffering system
Purpose is to eliminate CO2, combines CO2 with H2O creating carbonic acid, due to its instability splits into H and Bicarb
The function of the respiratory buffering system
Adjusts pH by blowing off or holding on to CO2
The function of the Kidney buffering system
Kidneys can absorb or excrete HCO3 or H as needed
Normal pH range and perfect value
7.35-7.45 (7.4)
Normal PaCO2 range and perfect value
35-45 (40)
Normal HCO3 range and perfect value
22-26 (24)
Relationship between CO2 and pH
For every 10mmHg in CO2 there is an opposite change in pH by 0.08
Relationship between HCO3 and pH
For every 10mEq/L in HCO3 the pH will change by 0.15 in the same direction
Relationship between K and pH
For every 0.10 change in pH the K will change by 0.6mEq/L in the same direction
