Acid and Alkalis Flashcards
What are strong acids?
they ionise completely
What are weak acids?
Don’t fully ionise
What is an acid?
a substance that forms aqueous solutions with a PH less than 7
What are examples of weak acids?
- Citric acid
- carbonic acid
What is strength in an acid?
how much and acid dissociates
What is concentration in an acid?
the amount of acid dissolved in a solvent
What is the pH of acids?
0 to 6
What is the pH of something neutral?
7
What is the pH of alkalis?
8 to 14
what is neutralisation?
when an acid and a base react to form water and a salt and involves the combination
What is neutralisation examples?
acid +alkali –> salt + water
acid + metal oxide –> salt + water
What are salts?
an ionic compound
What are examples of salts?
hydrochloric acid -> chloride
