Achieving an anarchist state Flashcards

Q
Discuss the principles of Direct Action?
A
- Otherwise known as ‘propaganda by the deed’, considered the Bakuninist approach involving the use of any form of direct action
- Has come associated with acts of violence and acts of terror. Bakunin drew inspiration from the Paris Commune of 1871 which was a spontaneous uprising against the French state. Replaced the oppressive state with a commune where there was to be common ownership

Q
Discuss the principles of Emerging Revolution?
A
- Favoured by thinkers such as Peter Kropotkin and Emma Goldman
- Argued that the revolution will emerge not from any form of violence but from people acting as if they were already free rather than trying to influence the decisions of government
- Such actions will allow individuals to become autonomous and learn about the benefits of solidarity, mutual aid and collective action

Q
Discuss the principles of Insurrection?
A
- Associated with egoistical anarchists such as Max Stirner
- Rejected the principles of both emerging revolution and propaganda as they involved overthrowing of existing conditions with new conditions
- Thus favoured the principle of insurrection with individuals elevating themselves above established institutions, leaving the establishment to decay and die
