What does the prostate look like?

A

There is WIDE species variation, some with various lobes. Some may have a corpus prostate, being a body, and some have a disseminate prostate, being glandular tissue spread diffusely across the outside of the urethra. Some may have some of both.

What are the bulbourethral glands?

A

Small, ovoid, paired glands located on either side of the pelvic urethra near the ischial arch. They are quite dense because they contain a lot of fibrous CT.

What is different about the bulbourethral glands in the boar?

A

They are very large and sit on the caudal surface of the pelvic urethra. They are important for providing the gel fraction of the ejaculate and causing the seminal plasma to coagulate following ejaculation.

A

They secrete a whole variety of fluids, ions etc which contribute to the fluid, non-cellular portion of the semen, called the seminal plasma.
