What is accommodation and what are the 2 types of accommodation
Accommodation can be defined as the process in which tourists stay in a particular destination.
The two types of accommodation are serviced accommodation and self serviced accommodation
What is self serviced accommodation
Priced charged for accommodation is only for accommodation and does not include the provision of any meals
What is serviced accommodation?
It refers to the accommodation where staff is available on premises to provide services such as room cleaning, bars,etc
Room service is charged in the price (even if not in use)
Features of self serviced accommodation
- it is cheap
- staff are not available to provide services such and cleaning and room service
- Target market is for the cost conscious traveler, students on a study trip and families with low income
Features of serviced accommodation
- expensive
- staff is available on premises to provide services
- price charged in accommodation includes the provision of one or more meals
What is the range of accommodation in serviced accommodation
- bed and breakfast
- resorts
- guest houses
- hotels
What is the range of accommodation in self serviced accommodation
- villas
- cottages
- backpacker hostel
- apartments
Differences between self serviced accommodation and serviced accommodation
1- serviced accommodation is expensive whereas self serviced accommodation is cheap
2- In serviced accommodation staff is available on premises to provide services whereas in self serviced accommodation staff might not be available on premises
3- in self serviced accommodation, there is limited range of entertainment whereas in serviced accommodation there is extensive range of entertainment made available on premises
Advantages to visitors of self catering accommodation
- saves money- cheaper than hotels
- more freedom - no set time for meals
- more privacy- quieter/ less people
What is bed and breakfast
- It is a private home in which guests can accommodate at night in private bedroom.
- The owner or manager lives in that house or on property
- the public areas such as lounge are given limited access to the guests or is shared with the hot family to some degree
- breakfast is included in the price, other meals may be available by arrangement
- Target market is for low income people, students and family who concerns about value of money
What is Backpacker hostel
- is a hostel establishment that aims on budget traveler and attracts a younger traveler who seeks adventurous activities
- bedrooms are in dormitory style and bathroom is shared although private bedrooms might be available
What is Boutique Hotel and what are the properties
- is a 5 star establishment providing all the features and facilities of a normal hotel, in a unique and exclusive style
- properties are its generally small and feature top class service and is marketed to the affluent.
- target market is the high income people and celebrities
What is guest house and what are their facilities?
Guest house is generally a private house converted for the dedicated and exclusive use of guest accommodation
- public areas of the establishment are for the exclusive use of the guests
- the owner or the manager lives off-site or an entirely separate area within the property
- offers a wide range of services than B & B and usually caters all meals.

What is European plan (EP)
Only room is provided and no food is serviced
