Accessory Digestive Organs Flashcards
accessory digestive organs
- liver
- gallbladder
- pancreas
- biliary apparatus
liver
- filters toxins from the blood
- breaks down old RBC’s
- produces bile
liver location
right quadrant of abdomen
right and left liver lobes
major lobes, separated by falciform ligament
caudate and quadrate liver lobes
considered subdivisions of right lobe
hepatic portal vein
carries nutrient-rich blood from GI tract capillaries, spleen, and pancreas to liver
hepatic artery
carries oxygen-rich blood to the liver
hepatic vein
empty into inferior vena cava
gallbladder
arises from inferior surface of liver, store and concentrate bile, emulsifying agent for digestion of fats in small intestine
biliary apparatus
network of thin ducts that transport bile from liver and gallbladder to duodenum
cystic duct
from gallbladder
common hepatic duct
from liver
common bile duct
junction of cystic and common hepatic
pancreas
both endocrine and exocrine functions
endocrine function of pancreas
production and secretion of insulin and glucagon
exocrine duct function of pancrea
production of pancreatic juice/enzymes
jaundice
- yellowing of skin, conjuctiva, and mucous membranes due to deposits of bilirubin
- bilirubin is toxic too the nervous system, causing neural damage if too much accumulates
obstructive jaudice
vile ducts are obstructed so bile cannot drain out of the liver and overflows into the blood
hemolytic jaundice
from RBC;s being broken down in large quantities
physiologic jaundice
immature liver cannot excrete the bilirubin as quickly as it is being formed
