What makes people conform?
social control, the enforcement of conformity by society by laws or social pressures.
What are the key factors in internal forms of social control?
Moral conscience, tradition and internalization of social rules and morality
Explain moral conscience in internal forms.
-psychodynamic theory
-ID is unconscious impulses responsible for criminal behaviour
-superego punishes ID by feeling guilty
Explain tradition in internal forms
-traditions & customs ensure you conform to rules
-you accept culture through socialisation
-to be accepted into a culture you must conform to their rules
-e.g. Jewish people don’t eat pork
Explain internalisation of social rules and morality
-we internalise society’s rules, then use them to tell us what is right and wrong to stay within the law
-done through socialisation
-links to right realism RCT.
How do external agencies of control stop us from offending?
Coercion: use of force to achieve desired behaviour
e.g London Riots 2011, or imprisonment/death penalty
Fear of punishment: punishment acts as a deterrent.
What is individual/general deterrence?
Individual: punishment imposed on offenders to deter them in future
General: seeing others being punished prevents you from doing the same
