What is the crime control model?
-one way the CJS works (Herbert Packer 1968)
-presumption of guilt
-conveyor belt explanation
-worth having a few innocent people convicted
-rights of society and victims
Evaluate the CC model
+efficient and speedy, crime is dealt with quickly
+public perception of toughness on crime is politically popular
-relies upon qualities of policing (coercive practices)
-doesn’t work for all crime causes (e.g. mentally ill)
What is the due process model?
-assumes innocence until proven guilty
-obstacle course explanation
-innocent are acquitted
-emphasis on rights of the defendant
Evaluate the DP model
+ protects human rights
+places controls on police behaviours
-slower and less efficient-
-can result in guilty offenders being released
