Internal Social Control
Moral conscience/Superego- Freud says that superego tells us what is right/wrong, this makes us conform to social control instead of act upon the Id.
Tradition/culture- communities have norms and expectations, we conform to social control so we are accepted into those communities.
External Social Control
Fear of punishment: Used as a deterrent to stop people from offending.
Individual Deterrence: punishment to prevent offenders from committing further crimes.
General Deterrence: Prevents others from committing similar crimes to those getting punished.
What is social control?
For society to function, people need to behave as others would expect them to. Persuading people into conforming to social norms. laws and expectations.
