Define Social Control
Social control means smooth running of society where individuals are conforming to the norms, values, morals and laws
State the two types of social control
1) internal
2) external
Define internal social control
Internal social control means we are socially controlled by our own individual values
Define external social control
Socially controlled through agencies
Agencies=family, friends, + CJS
Agencies can give negative sanctions and positive rewards
Describe the Social bond theory by Hirschi
People do delinquent behaviour, and their social bonds are considered weak or broken
What are the four bonds in the social bond theory?
1) attachment
2) commitment
3) involvement
4) Beliefs
What does attachment mean in the social bond theory by Hirschi?
When you form attachments you want to respect their normals and their values so you abide them
What does commitment mean in the social bond theory by Hirschi?
You have a conventional goals to society such as getting a good job, which would require abiding by the law and the morals
Whay down involvement mean in the social bond theory by Hirschi?
The more we get involved in convential goals which is considered prosocial the more we get tired so we won’t go against our own and societal beliefs.
What does belief mean in the social bond theory?
If we are made to believe the social norms, then we are less likely to break them
Define rational ideology
We internalise social rules, and we identify what is considered ‘right’ and what is considered ‘wrong’, and this makes us law-abiding
What is the Walter reckless containment theory?
The Walter reckless theory is that psychological tendencies will keep us internally contained, and this could be done through self control
