Why do we follow the rules linked to external social control
-Coercion - use or threat of force , may be physical or non-violent
-Fear of Punishment - individual deterrence ( punishment in order to prevent further crimes) , general deterrence ( punishment that prevents others )
Control Theory
Hirschi - looks at why people don’t commit crime
- We conform due to social bonds to society

Attachment - other’s opinions on us
Commitment - the risks of offending (a good job)
Involvement - do we have time to offend
Belief - strength of our moral code
Gottfredson and Hirschi (parenting)
- parenting plays a vital role in creating the bonds that prevent young people offending
Poor socialisation and absent parental discipline cause delinquency
Riley and Shaw (parenting)
Parents should:
- Involve themselves in their tonnages lives
- Take interest in their schooling and friends
- Show strong disapproval for criminal behaviour and explain the consequences
Heidensohn (feminists)
- Women are more closely controlled in a patriarchal society resulting in less opportunities to offend (domestic duties = no time to offend)
- Controlled by fathers then husbands
