What are the different areas of the CJS?

What is the role of the Police?
To arrest offenders and protect victims and the public, maintain order in society.
How do the Police work with other agencies in the CJS?
- Work with the courts to ensure defendants in custody, are brought before them, often give evidence in court (HM COURTS)
- Work with probation in the management of an offender. (PROBATION SERVICE)
- Work closely with the CPS in the charging and prosecution of offenders
What is the role of the Ministry of Justice?
The Ministry of Justice works with almost all the agencies in the criminal justice system as they help fund and oversee the operations of groups.
How does the Ministry of Justice work with other agencies in the CJS?
- They may work with the court system to help provide legal aid, administration of justice through courts and tribunals.
- They oversee the funding of prisons and the probation services, whilst regularly inspecting and advising both agencies on how they should progress.
What is the role of HM Courts and Tribunals?
Responsible for the administration of criminal, civil and family courts tribunals
How does HM Courts and Tribunals work with other agencies in the CJS?
- Contributes, by the judiciary, to law creation through judicial precedent and statutory interpretation
- Liaison with the police, independent security firms and prisons to ensure safe delivery of prisoners to court
- Arrangements of video links of a prisoner if not able to attend court for a hearing
- Prisoners held in court cells pending their court hearing and return to prison
What is the role of the CPS?
Prosecutes criminals that have been investigated by the police
How does the CPS work with other agencies in the CJS?
- advise the police on charging a suspect
- appear in the courts to conduct the advocacy of a case
- May work with the Ministry of Justice when discussing funding
What is the role of HM Prison Service?
Keep offenders who are sentenced in custody and help to rehabilitate
How does HM Prison Service work with other agencies in the CJS?
- lawyers may visit prisons for legal consultations
- judge sets term of imprisonment
- defendants denied bail by police or court sent back to prison
- work with probation services if prisoner is released
What is the role of the National Probation Service?
Responsible for the supervision of offenders in the community after their release from prison
How does the National Probation Service work with other agencies in the CJS?
- Police will arrest a prisoner recalled while on probation and ensure return to prison
- Liaison and preparation between agencies when prisoners are released
- Overseeing prisoner once released if on license or parole
- Liaise with police should there be any issues or recall if appropriate
What is the role of the Sentencing Council?
To develop sentencing guidelines and monitor their use
How does the Sentencing Council work with other agencies in the CJS?
Works with the judiciary and other legal professionals to produce guidelines and sentencing.
