what is an example of physical abuse, how would you spot it?
Physical abuse is defined as physical injury inflicted on a child by other than accidental means.
Bruises, black eyes, welts, lacerations, and rope marks
Broken bones
Open wounds,
Broken eyeglasses/frames,
Physical signs of being punished or restrained
Individual’s report being hit, slapped, kicked, or mistreated
Vulnerable adult’s sudden change in behavior
The caregiver’s refusal to allow visitors to see a vulnerable adult alone
What type of abuse is described here?
Being emotionally upset or agitated
Being extremely withdrawn and non communicative or non responsive
Showing unusual behavior usually attributed to dementia (e.g., sucking, biting, rocking)

Who is responsible for safeguarding?
Everyone who works with children or vulnerable adults has a responsibility for keeping them safe. They must know how to report concerns about physical, emotional or sexual abuse; neglect; trafficking or exploitation so that those concerns can be addressed quickly and appropriately.
When should you report a safeguarding concern?
If an adult at risk of being abused or neglected cannot keep themselves safe from abuse or neglect because of their care and support needs, then the local authority’s safeguarding duty applies.
This should be done as soon as possible.
