What were residential schools and when did they operate?

A

Operated from the 1800s through 1980s. They were schools that the Canadian government put Indigenous children in. Children were forcibly removed from their parents and were often far away from their communities. Students were not allowed to speak their own languages and some were physically abused. In 2008, the Canadian government apologized for this treatment.
