Mx govt tries to excise control through high taxes and immigration restrictions. Texans claim independence. Mx forces win at Alamo and Goliad, but lose to Sam Houston

Mexican War. When and why did it officially start?

A

After Mex refused to receive diplomat John Slidell, Polk sends in a force of US troops led by Zachary Taylor to a position north of the Rio Grande. Mex troops attacked a patrol. After Washington receives word of this, Polk gets declaration from Congress to wage war against Mex. May 13, 1846

What was the three pronged attack devised by Polk, and how did it fair?

  1. Land attack through new mexico into Cali.
  2. Naval attack of Cali.
  3. land attack into Mex.

Led by Stephen Kearny, New Mexico was easily secured. His force moved to Cali, where a group of Am. settlers led by John Fremont, in what was known as the Bear Flag Revolt, helped the cause.

Commodore John Sloat seized Monterey Bay, and Commodore Robert Stockton’s troops joined with Kearney’s to win at the Battle of San Gabriel

Colonel Alexander Doniphan defeats Mexicans to take El Paso, and then win at the Battle of Sacramento and take the city of Chihuahua. Led by a larger army under Zach Taylor, US forces win at the battles of Palo Alto and Resaca de la Palma and the Battle of Monterey. they withstand an attack in the Battle of Buena Vista

What Battles finally helped US win the MExican war?

A

Despite victories, Mex refused to negotiate with US. General Winfield Scott is sent to invade Mexico City. After winning the Battle of Cerro Gordo- the most important battle of the war- Scott is able to take Mexico City. Mex however continued Guerilla tactics and refused to negotiate.

A

Treaty of Guadalupe- hidalgo of 1848. Mexico cedes California, New Mexico, modern day Arizona for $15m and Mex agrees to pay $3.25 m in US claims. This secured San Francisco and San Diego for US, which now had the major 3 ports on the West Coast
