Abnormalities of Jaw and Oral Mucosa Flashcards
A condition in which the jaw is undersized, predominately affects the MANDIBLE
Micrognathia
Condition characterized by abnormally LARGE jaw. Component of pituitary gigantism (characterized by excess production of GH after closure of epiphyseal plates)
Macrognathia/macroglossia
Localized bony protuberances arising from the cortical plate
torus palatinus
torus mandibularis
COMMON mucosal invaginations at the labial vermilion commisure in adults
commissural lip pits
Rare CONGENITAL invaginations of lower lip
bilateral, symmetric
often inherited in combination with cleft lip and/or cleft palate
Paramedian lip pits
one of the most common major congenital human defects
cleft palate
sebaceous glands occurring on the oral mucosa. Multiple yellow papules. Typically involve buccal mucosa and lateral vermilion of the upper lip. ASYMPTOMATIC. No biopsy necessary
Fordyce granules
results in limitation of tongue movement
ankyloglossia
Common condition. Numerous grooves/fissures involving the dorsal aspect of the tongue. STRONG association with geographic tongue
Fissured tongue
Milding thickening of the dorsal aspect of the tongue
cig smoking, general debilitation, poor oral hygiene, dehydration.
Often misdiagnosed as a fungal infection
Coated tongue
Common benign condition affecting tongue but may affect other mucosal sites
lesions arise quickly and resolve and appear in a different area
Erythema Migrans (Geographic tongue)
Well-demarcated symmetrical zone of central atrophy of the filiform papillae in the dorsal tongue midline anterior to the circumvallate papillae
far more common in adults than children
Median rhomboid glossitis
UNCOMMON lesion arising in the lymphoid tissue of Waldeyer ring:
Palatine tonsils, lingual tonsils, pharyngeal adenoids, floor of mouth, ventral tongue and soft palate
Histopathologic features similar to BRANCHIAL CLEFT CYST
Lymphoepithelial cyst
sore throat, irritable cough and halitosis most common complaint
convoluted tonsillar crypts plugged with desquamated keratin, foreign material and bacterial microorganisms
Tonsillar concretions
