psychoeducation
A broad class of medications commonly used in the treatment of depressive and sometimes bipolar disorders; these drugs include monoamine oxidase inhibitors, tricycles, and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), such as Prozac.
antidepressants
A psychotherapy that uses learning principles and rational thinking principles and rational thinking strategies to alter maladaptive thoughts and beliefs that accompany behavior problems.
cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT)
A psychotherapy that provides families of people (often adolescents) with bipolar disorders with education and skills training relevant to the unique characteristics and developmental problem of teenagers.
These problems include rapid onsets and offsets of irritable and/or depressed moods, disturbances in sleep/wake cycles, and high levels of “family” conflict (expressed emotion). focus on the family
family-focused treatment (FFT)
A psychotherapy designed to help people with bipolar disorders improve “their moods” by understanding and working with their biological and “social rhythms”. The treatment emphasizes techniques to improve medication adherence, manage stressful life events, and rhythms that may be involved in mood episodes.
interpersonal and social rhythm psychotherapy
A diverse group of pharmaceuticals used in the treatment of epileptic seizures. “Anticonvulsant” drugs are also increasingly being used in the treatment of bipolar disorders, since many seem to act as mood stabilizers, and for the treatment of neuropathic pain. Also commonly known as antiepileptic drugs or as anti seizure drugs.
anticonvulsants
Drugs that do not have the same biochemical or physiological effects as standard neuroleptics. A🤬💊
atypical antipsychotics
A drug used to treat mania; commonly known as “lithium”. “Bipolar med”
lithium carbonate
“Emotional” overinvolvement with a person, usually taking the form of high levels of criticism and hostility; a risk factor for relapse of mental disorders such as schizophrenia.
expressed emotion (EE)
A structure in the forebrain that is part of the limbic system and is linked to emotions
amygdala
A study of the linked occurrence of a disorder and some genetic marker across several generations. 🪢🧑🏽🏫
linkage analysis
A mood disorder in which moods fluctuate over a long period, but neither the depressive not the manic episodes are as severe as in bipolar I or II disorder. 🌪
