Abnormal Development Flashcards
Definition of congenital abnormality?
Present at birth
What are 3 examples of chromosomal abnormalities?
- Trisomy 21: down’s syndrome
- Trisomy 18: edward’s syndrome
- Trisomy 13: Patau’s syndrome
Are congenital diseases hereditary or non-genetic?
Can be hereditary, spontaenous, non-genetic determind by failures of differentiation and morphogenesis
Definition of inherited abnormality?
Caused by inherited genetic abnormality
Types of inherited genetic abnormalities?
Mendelian, autosomal, polygenic
When do inherited abnormalities manifest?
May not manifest until later in life
Examples of autosomal recessive (inherited)?
Cystic Fibrosis and Sickle Cell Anaemia
Examples of autosomal dominant (inherited)
Huntington’s - doesn’t manifest until later life
Examples of X-linked? (inherited)
colour blindness, muscular dystrophy
Definition of acquired abnormality?
Caused by non-genetic environmental factors but may be congenital
Examples of acquired?
Fetal alcohol syndrome, TB, lung cancer, AIDS
Definition of multifactoral abnormality?
Due to many different factors
What are some examples of multifactorial neural tube defects?
spina bifida, anencephaly, hydrocephalus
Definition of polygenic gene disorder?
genetic disease which is the result of the interaction of several different genes, usually on different chromosomes
Example of a polygenic gene disorder?
Breast cancer (BRCA1/2) - rises in risk of unrelated genes even with strong family history
