Abdominal Wall Muscles Flashcards
Name the 5 muscles of the posterior abdominal wall
Iliacus, psoas major, psoas minor, quadratus lumborum and the diaphragm
Origin and attachments of the quadratus lumborum
Origin- Iliac crest and iliolumbar ligament
Attachment- Transverse process of L1-4 and the inferior border of 12th rib
Action of quadratus lumborum
Extension and lateral flexion of the vertebral column
Fixes 12th rib during inspiration
Innervation of quadratus lumborum
Anterior rami of T12-L4 nerves
Origin and attachments of psoas major
Origin- Transverse process and vertebral bodies of T12-L5
Attachments- Lesser trochanter of femur
Actions of psoas major
Flexion of the thigh at the hip and lateral flexion of the vertebral column
Innervation of psoas major
Anterior rami of L1-3 nerves
Origin and attachments of psoas minor
Origin- Vertebral bodies of T12 and L1
Attachment- Superior ramus of the pubic bone
Actions of psoas minor
Flexion of the vertebral column
Innervation of psoas minor
Anterior rami of L1 spinal nerve
Origin and attachments of iliacus
Origin- Iliac fossa and anterior inferior iliac spine
Attachment- Combines with tendon of the psoas major and inserts at lesser trochanter of the femur
Actions of iliacus
Flexion and lateral rotation of the thigh at the hip
Innervation of iliacus
Femoral nerve (L2-4)
What is iliopsoas?
Combination of iliacus and psoas major which acts as the major flexor of the thigh
Name the 3 flat muscles of the abdominal wall
External oblique, internal oblique, transversus abdominis
Origin and attachment of external oblique
Origin- Ribs 5-12
Attachment- Iliac crest and pubic tubercle
Function of external oblique
Contralateral rotation of the torso
Innervation of external oblique
Thoracoabdominal nerves (T7-11) and subcostal nerve (T12)
Origin and attachment of internal oblique
Origin- Inguinal ligament, iliac crest and lumbodorsal fascia
Attachment- Ribs 10-12
Function of internal oblique
Compression and rotation of the torso
Innervation of internal oblique
Thoracoabdominal nerves (T7-T11), subcostal nerve (T12) and branches of the lumbar plexus
Origin and attachment of transversus abdominis
Origin- Inguinal ligament, costal cartilages 7-12, the iliac crest and thoracolumbar fascia
Attachment- Conjoint tendon, xiphoid process, linea alba and the pubic crest
Function of transversus abdominis
Compression of abdomen
Innervation of transversus abdominis
Thoracoabdominal nerves (T7-T11), subcostal nerve (T12) and branches of the lumbar plexus
Fibre direction of external obliques
Inferomedially
Fibre direction of internal obliques
Superomedially
Fibre direction of transversus abdominis
Transversely
Name the 2 vertical muscles in the abdominal wall
Rectus abdominus and pyramidalis
What line splits the rectus abdominis into 2
Linea alba
Which lines mark the boundaries of the rectus abdominis
Linea semilunaris
Attachment and origin of rectus abdominis
Origin- Pubic crest
Attachment- Xiphoid process, costal cartilage 5-7
Function of rectus abdominis
Compression of the abdomen, stabilising the pelvis during walking and depressing the ribs
Innervation of rectus abdominis
Thoracoabdominal nerves (T7-11)
Attachment and origin of pyramidalis
Origin- Pubic crest and pubic symphis
Attachment- Linea alba
Function of pyramidalis
Tense the linea alba
Innervation of pyramidalis
Subcostal nerve (T12)
