Abdominal Vessels Flashcards
What is significant about the Hepatic Portal Vein?
It is not a true vein.
It carries nutrient-rich blood from the GIT and spleen to the liver and not directly to the heart. Blood from the GIT containing both nutrients and toxins arise through the HPV to the liver, which is responsible for filtering the blood.
The short yet significant vessel that has three branches, and arises from the aorta just as it enters the abdomen at approximately the level of the T12 vertebra is known as:
Celiac trunk / celiac artery
The Celiac Artery/Celiac Trunk divides into three main arteries that supply the abdominal organs of the foregut. Name these arteries.
Left Gastric Artery (LGA)
Splenic Artery (SA)
Common Hepatic Artery (CHA)
Arising from the anterior surface of the abdominal aorta. Immediately below the aortic hiatus of the diaphragm. Name this structure.
Celiac Trunk / Celiac Artery
Which is the smallest branch of the Celiac Trunk / Artery?
Left Gastric Artery (LGA)
Explain the supply of the Left Gastric Artery (LGA)
Ascends slightly until it reaches the lesser curvature of the stomach. It then descends the lesser curvature (LC) of the stomach. It gives off several small branches. About midway along the LC meets in anastomosis with Right Gastric Artery (RGA)
At the cardioesophageal junction the LGA gives off some small branches that supply the abdominal part of the oesophagus know as:
The oesophageal branches of the Left Gastric Artery (LGA)
Describe the oesphageal hiatus of the diaphragm
Opening / hole in diaphragm that serves to allow structures to pass through
Which structures pass through the oesphageal hiatus?
The oesophagus, anterior and the posterior vagal trunk, esophageal branches of the LGA and vein, and some lymphatic vessels.
Which is the largest branch of the celiac trunk?
The Splenic Artery (SA)
Describe the location and supply of the splenic artery (SA)
Heads laterally to the left along the superior boarder of the pancreas, finally giving off numerous small branches which enter the hilum of the spleen
Which of the three main arteries branching off the celiac trunk also give off some smaller branches that supply the neck, body and tail of the pancreas?
The Splenic Artery (SA)
From which main artery do the Short Gastric Arteries (SGA) arise and what do they primarily supply?
The Splenic Artery gives off small branches called SGA that supply the fundus of the stomach
As the terminal branches of the Splenic Artery (SA) approaches the hilum of the spleen, it gives off a couple of short branches called:
The Short Gastric Arteries (SGA).
What are the three main structures that the SA supplies in order of occurrence
Pancreas, fundus, spleen, left greater curvature of the stomach
What is significant about the Left Gastroomental Artery and where does it arise?
Arises from the terminal end of the Splenic Artery (SA), before it enters the spleen. It follows the greater curvature of the stomach down and towards the right, where it anastamoses with the Right Gastroomental Artery.
