Abdominal Vasculature and Lymphatics Flashcards
What three branches off the aorta supply the abdominal organs?
Celiac trunk - foregut, originates at T12
Superior mesenteric - midgut, originates at L1
Inferior mesenteric - hindgut, originates at L3
What two organs have dual blood supplies?
Duodenum and Transverse colon
What are the three branches off the Celiac Trunk?
Left gastric, splenic, and common hepatic
What are the five branches of the superior mesenteric artery?
Inferior pancreaticoduodenal
Intestinal branches
Middle colic
Right colic
Ileocolic
What are the three branches of the inferior mesenteric artery?
Left colic
Sigmoid branches
Superior rectal
What artery serves as an anastamoses between the celiac and superior mesenteric arteries?
Superior and inferior pancreaticoduodenal arteries
What artery serves as an anastamoses between the superior and inferior mesenteric arteries?
Marginal Artery of Drummond
What are the two venous drainage systems in the abdomen?
Portal system - drains digstive organs into the portal vein
Caval system - drains the posterior body wall structures into the inferior vena cava
What is the role of the portal system?
Drains blood from the digestive organs and spleen through the liver before it is returned to the IVC
Veins of the portal system do not have valves
What is the role of the Caval system?
Drains blood from non-digestive organs directly into the IVC
Azygous system is connected to the Caval system
What are the four anastomoses between the portal system and caval system?
Left gastric - esophageal
Paraumbilical - superficial epigastric
Superior rectal - inferior rectal
Colic veins - retroperitoneal veins
Where does the abdominal wall superior to the umbilicus drain lymph?
Anterior and posterior axillary nodes
Where does the abdominal wall inferior to the umbilicus drain lymph?
Superficial inguinal nodes
What two regions are anatomically close, but but have different pathways of lymphatic drainage?
Testes and Scrotum
Superior and inferior half of anal canal
