Somatic Pain
pain fibers are irritated by bacteria or chemicals. Usually sharp, constant, more precisely located.
Visceral Pain
described as cramp like, colicky, gaseous, usually intermittent. Obstruction usually a cause.
What are the parts of the EMT portion of the protocol?
General impression, airway, breathing, circulation, LOC. Pulse ox, assess for pulsating masses, try to distract patient through conversation or breathing techniques.
What are the Paramedic portions of the protocol?
EMT stuff, cardiac monitor, establish an IV, 12 lead, ondansetron
How does appendicitis typically present?
starts with vague periumbilical pain and migrates to right lower quadrant over time
What serious issue must be monitored for with abdominal pain?
hypovolemic shock for possible rupture
What is the dosage and route of Zofran for abdominal pain patients?
0.1 mg/kg slow IVP (over 2 to 5 minutes) MAX dose is 4.0 mg
What are some causes of RUQ pain?
Ulcer, hepatitis, enlarged liver, pneumonia, gallbladder
What are some causes of RLQ pain?
Appendicitis, perforation, diverticulitis, kidney stone, incarcerated hernia, Fallopian tube inflammation, ovarian cyst, ruptured ectopic pregnancy
What are some causes of periumbilical pain?
Intestinal obstruction, acute pancreatitis, early appendicitis
What are some of the causes of LUQ pain?
Ruptured spleen, ulcer, pneumonia, perforated colon
What are some of the causes of LLQ pain?
Perforated colon, ulcerative colitis, kidney stone, incarcerated hernia, ovarian cyst, ruptured ectopic pregnancy
How do kidney stones present?
Presents with flank pain that migrated to the lower quadrants.
