Sudden onset - AAA rupture, ruptured ectopic pregnancy
What are some red flags of C in socrates in regard to abdominal assessment?
Tearing pain - rupture
Spasmodic - bowel obstruction
What are some red flags of R in socrates in regard to abdominal assessment?
Radiates to shoulder - ruptured spleen/ectopic
Radiates to back - AAA
Chest - MI
What are some red flags of A in socrates in regard to abdominal assessment?
Pyrexia - appendicitis
Melena/haematemesis - GI bleed
Haematuria - kidney stones
What are some red flags of T in socrates in regard to abdominal assessment?
Pain before vomiting - appendicitis
Gradual worsening of intensity - appendicitis
What are some red flags of E in socrates in regard to abdominal assessment?
Worse after eating - Pancreatitis

Severe pain
What are some red flags of PMHx in regard to abdominal assessment?
Previous surgeries - bowel obstruction
What are some red flags of DHx in regard to abdominal assessment?
Anticoagulants/Antiplatelets - GI Bleed
What are some red flags of SHx in regard to abdominal assessment?
Alcohol - pancreatitis, GI bleed
Smoking - AAA, MI, Cancer
Unprotected sex - ruptured ectopic
What are some red flags of FHx in regard to abdominal assessment?
AAA
Appendicitis
Pancreatitis

What does a white layer on the tongue indicate?
Fungal infection
What are the 6F’s?
Fluids
Fetus
Flatulence
Faeces
Fats
Fulminant masses
What is Cullens sign?
Bruising around belly button
Can be a sign of haemorrhagic pancreatitis, ruptured spleen, rupture ectopic pregnancy.
What is Grey Turners sign?
Bruising around flanks
Can be a sign of retroperitoneal haemorrhage or trauma
What are the nine regions of abdomen?
Right hypochondriac (top right)
Epigastric region (top middle)
Left hypochondriac (top left)
Right lumbar region (middle right)
Umbilical region (Middle middle)
Left lumbar region (middle left)
Right iliac region (lower right)
Hypogastric region (lower middle)
Left iliac region (lower left)
If there its rebound tenderness, what does this indicate?
Possible peritonitis
What is the costovertebral angle test?
Lay one hand just below 12th intercostal rib on back
Make fist with other hand and punch flat hand
If pt feels tenderness or pain its likely they have pyelonephritis
What is the rovsing sign?
For appendicitis
RLQ pain with palpation of the LLQ
What is the psoas sign?
RLQ pain with extension of the right hip (bending knee upwards against resistance)
What is the obturator sign?
RLQ pain with internal and external rotation of the flexed right leg (pt laying on side)
