How can we support a person’s health, comfort and wellbeing?

What is acute pain?
Pain that comes on suddenly but usually disappears and it has a specific cause.
What is chronic pain?
Ongoing pain which can last for months even after the cause of the pain has gone.
What are some physical signs of pain?
Physical tics
Skin condition e.g pale skin can indicate that there is not enough red blood cells.
Repeatedly touching or guarding part of the body
Moving slowly
What are some verbal signs of pain?
Self-report
Crying out
Groans/grunts
What are some non-verbal signs of pain?
Facial expressions e.g. those who have a cognitive impairment
What are some behavioral signs of pain?
- Altered energy levels
- Altered character e.g. more anxious and agitated
- Changes in usual eating and sleeping pattern
What actions can professionals take to ensure that we work in a person-centered way and ensure good nutrition and hydration?
- Ensuring effective nutrition and hydration by providing food and drink that meets individual needs.
- Ensuring food and drink provided does not have contraindications with any medicine that the individual is taking.
- Supporting individuals who might experience difficulties with eating or drinking.
- Providing equipment to support individuals in eating and drinking independently such as 2 handled mugs, cups with lids.
- Ensuring individuals are provided with sufficient time to eat and drink.
- Close monitoring of nutrition and fluid intake
- Working in partnership with carers or family members to ensure effective nutrition and hydration of the individual
- Working in partnership with other healthcare professionals to ensure effective nutrition and hydration.
What is the purpose of the prevention agenda?
Aim is that life expectancy would be increased by at least five years by 2035
Aims to try and keep people healthy to prevent problems throughout individuals lives from birth to death
If a problem occurs, individuals should be supported and helped to manage it.
Give some of the preventative approaches.
Help people to stay healthy and independent for as long as possible.
Stopping problems from arising in the first place
Provide people with knowledge and skills to make lifestyle choices that help them to stay healthy.
What ways can we use health promotion to support the prevention agenda?
Social and environmental interventions to empower individuals to improve their health
Opportunistic delivery of health promotion activities e.g. promoting physical activities.
Campaigns by specific groups and charities.
What is Making Every Contact Count?
MECC is an evidence-based approach to improve people’s health and wellbeing by changing their behaviour.
MECC approach encourages healthcare workers to talk to people improve their health by addressing lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise and alcohol consumption.
Give a range of methods of taking a holistic approach to healthcare.

Bespoke treatment plans that meet the personal choices and needs - this should be made using personal aims and goals and objectivities established by the person
