A3: Locus Of Control Flashcards
What is Locus of Control (LoC)?
How individuals perceive the origin of their behaviors and outcomes.
whether they believe their actions are controlled by internal factors (their own efforts) (internal locus) or external factors (fate, luck, other people). (External locus)
What is an Internal Locus of Control?
People with an internal locus of control believe they can influence their lives and outcomes through their own efforts and actions. They attribute success and failure to their hard work, abilities, and dedication.
What is an External Locus of Control?
Individuals with an external locus of control attribute their successes and failures to factors outside their control, like luck, other people, or circumstances. They may believe outcomes are beyond their influence.
Explain the LoC Continuum
The LoC Continuum suggests that locus of control is not simply “internal” or “external.” People exist on a spectrum, with varying levels of internal or external control influencing their beliefs about outcomes.
How is LoC measured according to Rotter?
Rotter created a questionnaire with paired statements to measure LoC. For example, one pair contrasts the belief that grades depend on studying (internal) versus grades being outside personal control (external).
How does Locus of Control relate to attributions in health behaviour?
People use LoC to attribute causes to behaviour. Internals see their health outcomes as within their control, which might make them more proactive in health decisions. Externals might see health outcomes as outside their control, which can make them feel powerless to change their behaviour.
What is a strength of the Locus of Control model in health?
A major strength is that understanding LoC can help in developing health interventions.
Studies show that people with an Internal LoC are more resilient against health issues, such as obesity or stress, suggesting that fostering an internal LoC could improve health outcomes.
What is a limitation of Locus of Control’s role in health?
Locus of Control may not have alot of influence in familiar situations, where habits override personal control.
For example, someone may ignore health advice despite an internal LoC because they are accustomed to certain unhealthy behaviours.
