A2: Principles Of Asepsis Flashcards
Asepsis
A (without) Sepsis (infection)
Aseptic Technique
Means of achieving and maintaining an object or surface that is free from infectious organisms
Antiseptic Technique
Used on living tissue to destroy or inhibit growth of microbes
-“cidal”
To kill or destroy microbes
-“static”
Inhibit growth and stop the microbes from multiplying
Examples of Antiseptics Used in Practice
- Chlorohexadine
- Iodine Compounds (betadine, prepodyne)
- Alcohol
- Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2)
Contaminate
Surface (subject or animal) that harbours pathogens
Infected
Object or animal has become invaded by pathogens
Antiseptic
An agent used on living tissue to destroy or inhibit growth of microbes
Asepsis/Aseptic
Complete absence of all living organisms on inanimate objects or surfaces
Clean
Describes an object or surface that has been disinfected and not knowingly exposed to pathogens
Disinfectant
Agent used on inanimate objects to destroy or inhibit the growth of microbes
Microbe
Microscopic living organisms (bacteria/viruses/fungi/cysts/spores)
Pathogen
Microbe capable of causing infection or disease
Sterile
Describes an inanimate object or surface that is free of all living organisms
