Explain Four Stroke Engine Operation
- Intake (piston goes down, fuel air mix enters through intake valve)
- Compression (piston goes up, intake valve closes, fuel/air mix compressed)
- Power (fuel/air ignited and explodes, piston is pushed down, this pushes the crankshaft)
- Exhaust (intake valve opens to expel burned gas, piston moves up)

- Magnetic Compass
- Vacuum Gauge
- Engine Tachomete
- Airspeed Indicator
- Attitude Indicator
- Altimeter
- Course Deviation Indicator (CDI)
- Turn Coordinator
- Heading Indicator
- Vertical Speed Indicator (VSI)
DA-20 Engine Insturments
- Cylinder Head Temperature (CHT)
- Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT)
- Fuel Pressure
- Fuel Quantity
- Oil Temperature
- Oil Pressure

What is the purpose of an aircraft’s oil system?
The engine oil system performs several functions to include:
Cooling, Cleaning, Sealing, Lubrication
* Lubrication of the engine’s moving parts.
* Cooling the engine by reducing friction.
* Removing heat from the cylinders.
* Providing a seal between the cylinder walls and pistons.
* Carrying away contaminants which cleans the engine.
Oil System Pathway
Wet Oil Sump → Engine-Driven Oil Pump → Oil Filter → Vernatherm (Cool Flow) or to Oil Cooler (Hot Flow) → Engine Cylinders, Components & Accessories
What Fuel does the DA-20 use, what is the approx burn rate, and weight per gallon
Approved fuel grades: AVGAS 100LL or 100
Fuel weighs approximately 6 pounds per gallon.
The DA20-C1 fuel burn rate is approximately 6 gallons/hour.
Fuel System Pathway
Fuel Tank → Gascolator → Duke’s Fuel Pump or Bypass → Fuel Shutoff Valve → Engine Driven Pump (and swirl chamber) → Fuel Control Unit → Fuel Distribution Manifold → Fuel Injector Nozzles → Engine Cylinders.
Which Magneto Powers Lower Spark Plugs
Right Magneto
Which Magneto Powers Upper Spark Plugs
Left Magneto
Ignition System Pathway
Ignition Switch → Magnetos → Ignition Wires → Spark Plugs
Electrical System Pathway
Battery/Alternator → Electrical Wiring → Electrical Bus → Circuit Breakers
→ Electrical Equipment
Brake System Pathway
Brake Fluid Hydraulic Reservoirs → Brake Lines → Parking Brake
Mechanism → Disc Brakes
Where are the DA-20 antennae located?
- VHF radio (COM 1) in the vertical stabilizer
- NAV equipment (VOR) in the horizontal stabilizer
What is contained in the pitot-static system? (What needs ram air to work)
- Pitot-static probe below the left wing
- Airspeed indicator (ASI) [pitot AND static]
- Altimeter
- Vertical speed indicator (VSI)
- Transponder Mode C [bc barometric alt]
What are the 4 warning lights in the DA-20?
- GEN warning
- CANOPY warning
- START warning
- EPU warning
What lighting systems are in the DA-20?
- Map
- Strobe
- Position
- Taxi

- EPU
What are the elements of the vacuum system?
- Engine-driven vacuum pump
- Air filter
- Attitude Indicator
- Heading Indicator
- Vacuum Gauge
What is the maximum temperature for operation of the GFRP composite
structure for the DA-20? Where is the warning light located?
131°F (55°C)
The indicator is located between the seat back cushions and may be viewed by parting the seat back cushions. At temperatures below 55° C (131° F), the indicator is solid red. Above 55°C, it displays a contrasting red “55” on a black background.
At ambient temperatures above 38° C (100° F) the indicator must be checked prior to flight.
What are the 9 antennae on the DA20?
GPS (Embedded, behind canopy)
NAV (Embedded, Horizontal Stabilizer)
COM 1 (Embedded, Vertical Stabilizer)
COM 2
Transponder
Marker
TAS (Top)
TAS (Under)
ELT
Where is the EPU plug in?
On the IP side
What does the Ammeter display?
The ammeter displays the current flowing between the battery and the main bus
What does it mean when amperage is positive or negative?
When the amperage is
positive, the battery is receiving a charge. When the amperage is negative, the battery is supplying
current to the bus.
What does the voltmeter display, and what does it read when the alternator is operating vs when it is not?
The voltmeter displays the voltage on the main bus. When the alternator is operating the voltage is
normally about 14 volts. When the alternator is not operating (such as before engine start) the battery
voltage is displayed.
What are the volts/amps of the battery?
12V/20Amp
What are the volts/amps of the alternator?
14V/40Amp
