Engel (1977): Health / illness is the result of several interacting factors: Biological, psychological/behavioural & Social
The treatment takes into account all three and aims to enhance individuals health
Can lead to educational programs (like stopping smoking or losing weight)

A

Physiological addiction: being psychologically addicted to a substance, like alcohol and smoking
Behavioural addiction: being addicted to a behaviour, like gambling or shopping.

what is Griffiths’ six components of addiction and their definitions?

A

Salience - physical and psychological dependence i.e. it is impossible to lead a normal life without the substance/ behaviour
Tolerance - increased doses needed to achieve the original effects
Withdrawal - the effects that occurs when an individual suddenly stops the addictive activity
Relapse - repeatedly reverting back to the dependent patterns of behaviour after giving up
Conflict - between the individual and other people and also within themselves
Mood alteration - the activity produces numerous positive and negative experiences

Stressors: a threat that creates stress.
Physiological stress: the body’s physical response to stress.
Psychological stress: the emotions caused when a stressor happens.
Perceived ability to cope: how you think of the stressor and you ability to cope with the stressor.
