A03 of localisation of function Flashcards
strength
Brain scanning evidence which provides support for the idea that functions are localised in the brain, brain scans a highly objective and scientific way of measuring activity which establishes cause-and-effect relationships in empirical ways, provides non arguable evidence for localisation of function
Limitation
plasticity, research are found on the brain has been damaged and a specific function has been lost the brain will try to compensate for it by reorganising itself in attempt to recover the last function and many case studies have shown that people can recover their lost abilities, this is a limitation because I suppose the holistic theory that the whole brain works together to recover the ability to have been lost
strength case study
The idiographic case study of Phineas gage supports the localisation theory as only his personality had an impacted the support of theory as it only shows a part of his brain was impacted which was his front lobe which is associated with planning, reasoning and control, this shows localisation of function however, because it is an idiographic case study the damage is specific to him which means that it is subjective as no one else has brain damage may not be the same for others to there may be different changes so we cannot generalise findings to everyone. to add to this he had a face infection with significant scarring so people treated him differently in which he may have treated them differently which may have been the reason for the changes in his personality
