Cbt techniques
Outcome studies
Intro for cbt
Assumes that people have distorted beliefs and that’s what causes schizo. It influences their behaviour in maladaptive ways
W.g. someone with schizo may think their behaviour is being controlled by someone else
So delusions at et hough to be a result of faulty interpretations of events
Talk about cbt techniques
Used to help patient identify and correct faulty thinking
Looks back at the origins of the symptoms
Encourages to evaluate the content of their delusions or any internal voices they hear and to consider ways in which they might test the validity of their faulty beliefs
May be set behavioural assignments to improve their level of functioning
Learning of maladaptive responses often result of distorted thinking or mistakes in assessing cause and effect
Patient learns alternatives to previous maladaptive beliefs by looking for alternative explanations and coping strategies that are already present in the patients mind
Talk about outcome studies
Measure how well a patient does after a particular treatment, compared with the accepted form of treatment for that condition. Outcome studies of cbt show that patients who recieve cbt xp less hallucinations and delusions and recover their functioning to a greater extent than those who recieve anti psychotic medication
2 people who studied outcome studies for cbt
Dury et al
Kuipers et al
What did drunk et al do and find
Benefits of ct in terms of reduction if positive symptoms of schizo
25-50% reduction in recovery time for patients given combination if anti psychotic drugs and cbt
What did Kuipers do and find
Agreed with drury
But said there were lower patient drop out rates and better satisfaction when cbt was used in addition to an tipsy chaotic medication
Give an example of delusional belief in terms of cbt
Event See a man outside house Interpretation He's following me Feeling Scared and paranoid Behaviour Avoid going out
Intro to psychodynamic therapy or psychoanalysis
Based on assumption that in divs are often unaware of the influence of unconscious conflicts on their current psychological state
Aim is to help bring this conflicts to the conscious mind to be dealt with
Assumes that symptoms are meaningful and are a product of the life history of the individual patient
Talk about psychodynamic techniques
Therapist creates alliance with patient. More severe equals more support must be provided
First task is to win the trust of the patient and build rel with them. Does this by replacing harsh and punishing conscience with Obe that is less destructive and more supportive
As patient gets healthier they play a more active role in their own recovery and therapist less active role
