A world of machines Flashcards
Load
Load: force, such as the weight of an object, resisting motion against which a lever works
Effort
Effort: force used to cause movement
First-class lever
First-class lever: lever with the fulcrum between the effort and the load
Force multipliers
Force multipliers: simple machine that supplies a greater force than the effort used. The effort must be applied over a greater distance than the load is moved
Second-class levers
Second-class levers: lever with the load between the effort and the fulcrum
Mechanical advantage
Mechanical advantage: the advantage of force-multiplying levers or other machines as defined by load/effort
Third-class levers
Third-class levers: lever with the effort between the load and the fulcrum
Speed multipliers
Speed multipliers: simple machine that increases the speed of an object. The effort applied must be greater than the load but applied over a shorter distance
Fulcrum
Fulcrum: point around which a lever turns
