A&P Topic 1: Intro to the Human Body Flashcards
What is anatomy?
The scientific study of the body’s structures and how they relate to one another
What is gross anatomy?
The study of larger structures of the body, typically with unaided eye (macroscopic anatomy)
What is microscopic anatomy?
The study of very small structures of the body using magnifications
What does regional mean?
study of structures that contribute to specific body regions
What does systemic mean?
the study of the structures that contribute to specific body systems
What is physiology?
The scientific study of the chemistry and physics of the structures of the body and ways in which they work together to support life
What are the chemical levels of organization?
Elements, atoms and subatomic particles
What are molecules?
2 or more atoms combined together
What does the cellular level mean?
smallest independently functioning unit, bacteria
What are tissues?
A group of similar cells working together to perform a specific function
What are the 4 types of tissues?
epithelial, connective, nervous, muscular
What are organs?
a structure of 2 or more tissue types performing a specific physiological function
What are organ systems?
2 or more organs performing a major functions (most organs contribute to more than one system)
What is an organism?
A living being that can support all physiological functions needed for life
What are the functions of the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, and nervous system?
skin, support form, movement and information
