(A&P) The Lymphatic System Flashcards
What is the primary function of the lymphatic system?
To remove bacteria and foreign materials, preventing infection, and to drain away excess fluids.
What are the main components of the lymphatic system?
Lymph fluid, lymph vessels, and lymph nodes.
How does lymph move through the body?
It is propelled by movements such as muscle contractions and flows through a series of one-way valves.
What is the composition of lymph?
Lymph is a straw-colored fluid produced from blood plasma, carrying lymphocytes and fewer nutrients compared to blood.
In which direction does lymph travel?
From body tissues back towards the heart.
What is the role of lymph nodes in the lymphatic system?
They filter lymph, extracting poisons, pus, and bacteria, and play a crucial role in defending against infection.
How does massage impact the lymphatic system?
Massage assists lymph flow, encouraging the removal of waste products and toxins.
Where do the lymph vessels eventually drain their contents?
Into a vein at the base of the neck, mixing lymph into the venous blood returned to the heart.
What are the two large lymphatic vessels in the body?
The thoracic duct and the right lymphatic duct.
How do lymph nodes react during an infection?
They may swell up and become tender as they attempt to destroy germs.
What is the significance of the thoracic duct in the lymphatic system?
It receives lymph from the left side of the head, neck, chest, abdomen, and lower body.
Where are lymph nodes located in the body?
Along the routes of principal lymphatic vessels, such as in the neck, armpits, and groin.
What happens to lymph after it filters through at least one lymph node?
It returns to the bloodstream.
How should massage be performed to aid lymph flow?
By applying pressure to direct lymph towards the nearest lymph node.
