A - Media Influences Flashcards
What does SLT be applied?
An adolescent may observe a model displaying addictive behaviour
Model is reinforced (vicarious reinforcement)
In order to imitate the behaviour, the adolescent must attend to the behaviour, retain and be motivated to reproduce it
Motivation may occur if they have an expectation that they would be similarly rewarded (cool among friends)
Imitation is increased with self-efficacy
Imitation/observation is more likely to occur if the model is admired and/or similar to the oberver
Why may media have a negative influence behaviour?
It can encourage addictive behaviour especially if it portrays it in a glamourised way - hiding the true cost of addiction
Why may media also be a positive influence?
Could potentially be used to promote healthy lifestyles and behaviour changes, such as smoking cessation
