A healthy start in life Flashcards
1
Q
Immunity in chicks
A
Maternal immunity comes into yolk
Albumen is ingested - IgA and IgM
IgM & IgA from oviducts
IgG in yolk absorbed into blood
2
Q
How to optimise immunity in young?
A
- Vaccinate the mother (ruminants 1 month before)
- Good plane of nutrition of mum (makes sure she has substance in colostrum)
- Mother & young pair up: Clean environment for birth, low pathogen load, rotation of pasture, drench and vaccinate animals etc.
- Vaccinate young after maternal immunity declines
- Give a booster vaccination
- Low stress to reduce premature birth
- Breeding “good mothers” - select for this trait
3
Q
Main antibody transferred to young in ruminant milk
A
IgG (75%)
IgA & IgM in much smaller amounts
Non-ruminants is mostly IgA
4
Q
Transfer of maternal immunity - T cell lymphocytes
A
In colostrum
Survive in intestine and penetrate intestinal wall and reach mesenteric lymph nodes
Enhance protection from e.g. E.coli
5
Q
Failure of passive transfer of maternal immunity in colostrum
A
- Young not suckling
- Immunocompromised mother
- Deformity of teat/udder
- Mother malnutrition
- Poor mothering ability
- Competition i.e. lots of young (large litter size)
- Absorption failure
etc.
