Difference between axial and appendicular skeleton?
Axial: skull, vertebral column, thoracic cage
Appendicular: appendages and pelvic bone
What is a fossa?
A depression in a bone, ex: pelvic bone
What is a sulcus?
A shallow groove, ex: femur
What is a meatus?
Tube like opening, ex: ear
What is a process?
Projection or outgrowth, forms joints in the condyle, facet, head, and neck. They serve as attachments for CT.
Condyle and Epicondyle
Condyle: knuckle like large round projection, forms joint
Epicondyle: the projection on top of a condyle, site of muscle attachment
What is a facet?
Small smooth surface
What is a head?
Rounded articular process atop a narrower neck
What is a trochanter?
a large projection on the femur
What is a tubercle?
Small knob rounded like projection
What is a spine?
sharp slender projection
What is a crest
Prominent ridge onna bone
What is a tuberosity?
Large, rounded rough projection
What is a linea?
A line, found on long, narrow ridges of bones
What 2 sets of bones make up the skull?
The cranium: encloses the brain
Facial bones: support and position the eyes anteriorly and provide attachment for facial muscles
