9C Genetic Drift & Gene Flow Flashcards
Genetic Drift’s affects and examples
Examples:
The founder effect occurs when a small unrepresentative sample of individuals separates from a larger population to colonise a new region and start a new population
The bottleneck effect occurs when a large portion of a population is wiped out by a random event
Effects:
Founder effect: Reduces genetic diversity through the establisment of new population with a small unrepresentative sample of the original population
Bottleneck effect: Reduces genetic diversity through the removal of alleles from random events
Gene Flow’s affect
Gene flow involvees the introduction or removal of alleles between populations through either migration or interbreeding
Effects:
Immigration = increase of genetic diversity
emmigration = decrease of genetic diversity
intrbreeding = increase of genetic diversity
