7C THE SECOND LINE OF DEFENCE Flashcards
What is the Second line of defence. Qualities?
The innate immune system reefers to the non-specfic defence mechanisms that immediately become activated when a pathogen is detected.
Fast, Non-specfic and no memory

What are inteferons? What do they do? (3)
Interferons are a group of cytokines (signalling molecules) Released from a host cells in response to a viral pathogen
- These proteins interfere with viral replication
- Signals to nearby cells to put up barrieers
- Signals infected cells to trigger cell death
What is the compliment system? What are its functions?
