9A Flashcards
What is the major characteristic of the Archaebacteria and the Eubacteria?
The contain ONLY prokaryotic organisms which means they do NOT have a true nucleus with a membrane surrounding the genetic material and the organelles are not surrounded by a membrane
List three ways that archaebacteria are different from eubacteria
- archaebacteria’s cell walls lack a certain compound
- parts of archaebacteria’s DNA are more similar to eukaryotes than to other bacteria
- many archaebacteria live in extreme environments
What are the three shapes bacteria can have
Sperical ,called coccus
Rod-shaped ,called bacillus
Spiral ,called spirillum
Do all bacteria have a cell membrane
Yes
What are three things bacteria need to survive
A great deal of food, they need oxygen to I grow, they need a specific temperature to live in
List three human foods that bacteria help produce
- yogurt
- cheese
- dill pickles
What is a virus made of
A nucleic acid core with protein coat
Why is the virus not classified into a kingdom
It doesn’t have a cell membrane
What are two things that can protect your body from viruses
Vaccinations, good hygiene
Like all cells bacteria is surrounded by what
A cell membrane a cell wall and a capsule
True or false: bacteria are Prokaryotic?
True
The action of a virus is called what
Lytic cycle
How do bacteria reproduce?
Binary fission
What do all bacteria have?
Cell membrane
What is a latent virus?
A virus that remains inactive inside a host cell
Are viruses living organisms?
No
What is a coccus?
Spherical bacteria
Give two examples of decomposed organisms?
Bacteria and fungi
What two kingdoms contain prokaryotic organisms?
Archaebacteria and Eubacteria
Do most bacteria cause disease in humans?
Although many do cause human diseases most do not. They are important decomposed organisms breaking down dead organic material to return nutrients to the food chain
Does antibiotic resistant bacteria support evolution?
No
What does prokaryotic mean?
There is no true nucleus with a membrane surrounding it and organelles are not surrounded by a membrane. Genetic material is clumped together in a nuclear area
How do most bacteria move?
With flagella
What is Cyanobacteria?
Eubacteria that resembles algae because of its blue green color
What is binary fission?
DNA is doubled by DNA replication. The cell membrane then pinches in two until the cell splits causing two daughter cells.
If bacteria grow so quickly why don’t they cover the whole earth?
Because they need very specific conditions to grow in. Lack of food or water, insufficient oxygen and waste build up prevent colonies from getting too big.
