9.7 Synaesthesia + 9.8 Spatial Neglect Flashcards
Synaesthesia
a perceptual experience in which stimulation of one sense produces additional sensations in another
Causes of Synaesthesia
-> Psychologist are still unsure
-> Increases communication between brain regions responsible for processing perceptual information
Spatial neglect
a neurological disorder where individuals can’t notice anything on their left/right side even despite no sensory loss
Spatial Neglect causes
stroke or TBI, most commonly to the back area of the parietal lobe of the right hemisphere
-> Parietal lobe has an important role in attention and conscious awareness of objects and self.
Spatial neglect symptoms
-> Forgetting/ignoring left side
-> feelings of alienation from left side of body
-> Bumping into objects with the left side of body
-> Compensation: inferring stimulus belongs to right side (hearing, clock with all numbers on the right).
Diagnosis Spatial Neglect
->Cancellation tasks
-> Virtual reality simulations eye tracking tasks
Treatment of Spatial Neglect
-> patient may be asked to look through prism glasses that make you turn your left eye to see an image clearly
-> visuomotor, cognitive, and behavioral training
