8.4 Visual Perception + 8.4.1 Biological Factors Part 1 Flashcards
Visual Perception
The brain’s ability to make sense of what the eyes see
Visual Sensation
Process of the eyes physically receiving and responding to light from the environment
How does our eyes receive light?
Stimulus energy -> Reception -> Transduction -> Transmission -> Interpretation and Organisation
Stimulus Energy
Light energy going into our eyes
Reception
Photoreceptors in the eye detect and respond to light
Transduction
Process where receptors change energy into chemical signals, which travels to the brain as electrical signals
Transmission
Sends sensory info in the form of electrical signals to relevant areas of the brain through optic nerve
Interpretation
The primary visual cortex receives the info and interprets it: assigns meaning to it so it can understood
Organisation
Involves assembling the features of the information in a meaningful way
Types of Receptors
Rods and Cones
Rods
Respond to low levels of light
Poor at detecting fine details
Not involved in colour vision (dominant in low light)
Cones
Respond to high levels of light
Responsible for well-lit conditions
Detects fine details, colour vision (dominant in well-lit)
