9.3 Blood Vessels Flashcards
what are blood vessels
tubes through which blood circulates in the body
what are the types of blood vessels
-arteries
-veins
-capillaries
what is the structure of arteries
-carry blood away from the heart
-they carry oxygenated blood (except for pulmonary artery)
-blood flows very fast and at high pressure in arteries
-they have thick muscular walls to withstand blood being carried at high pressures
-walls of arteries have elastic fibres
-they have a narrow lumen to maintain the high blood pressure
-they don’t have valves since high blood pressure prevent back flow
what is the structure of veins
-carries blood towards the heart
-carry deoxygenated blood (except for pulmonary vein)
-blood flows slow
-has thin muscular walls with little elastic fibres
-has a large lumen
-valves are present
functions of capillaries
-carries blood to and from the body’s cells
-role is to provide an exchange of oxygen, nutrients and waste products between the blood and body’s cells
structure of capillaries
-the smallest blood vessels that connect arteries and veins
-carries both oxygenated and deoxygenated blood
-blood flows slowly in capillaries at low pressure
-one cell thick
-have a very narrow lumen. just wide enough for a red blood cell to pass through
-have very thin, permeable walls
-no valves
identify these main blood vessels:
-pulmonary artery
-pulmonary vein
-vena cava
-aorta
-hepatic vein
-hepatic artery
-hepatic portal vein
-renal vein
-renal artery
