9.2 Heart Flashcards
identify all parts of heart
what are coronary arteries
coronary arteries supply blood to the heart muscle
explain the difference in thickness of muscular wall of atriums and ventricles
ventricles have thicker muscular walls then the atrium because they pump blood out of the body and need to do it at a higher pressure
explain the difference in thickness of muscular wall of atriums and ventricles
left ventricle’s muscular wall is thicker than the right ventricle’s muscular wall because it has to pump blood at a higher pressure to the whole body whereas the right ventricle has to pump blood just to the lungs
how to monitor activity of the heart
- ecg
- pulse rate
- listening to sounds of valves closing with stethoscopes
describe procedure of investigation of physical activity on the heart rate
- record the pulse rate and breathing rate for 1 minute
- exercise for a while
- record the pulse rate and breathing rate every minute until it returns to the resting pulse and breathing rate
- this experiment will show that during exercise, the heart rate increases and may take several minutes to return to normal
explain the effect of physical activity on the heart rate
-during exercise, the muscle cells of the body need more energy
-therefore they need more oxygen and glucose for respiration
-the waste products of respiration also need to be removed faster from cells
-moreover some of the muscle cells may have respired anaerobically without oxygen so the oxygen debt needs to be repaid
-the heart rate therefore increases to meet these demands
what is coronary heart disease
when the coronary artery becomes blocked, leading to the blood and oxygen starvation in the heart muscles. this leads to a heart attack
what causes coronary heart disease
the buildup of cholesterol and other fatty substances within the coronary arteries
what are the possible risk factors for coronary heart disease
-diet
-lack of exercise
-stress
-smoking
-genetic predisposition
-age
-gender
how to reduce risk of coronary heart disease
-quit smoking
-maintain a healthy diet with reduced animals fats
-exercise regularly
